Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Emmanuel Inyang has paid glowing tribute to the gallantry and selfless sacrifice of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who laid down their lives in defence of the nation’s unity and sovereignty.
Engr. Inyang spoke on Thursday at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day wreath-laying ceremony at the Mkpat Enin Cenotaph, where he announced a monthly N100,000 subvention for the Nigeria Legion, Mkpat Enin.
He described the peace enjoyed in Mkpat Enin and Nigeria at large as a product of the unwavering dedication and patriotism of the fallen heroes, stressing that their legacy of service and sacrifice must never be forgotten.
The Council Chairman called on individuals, corporate organizations and well-meaning citizens to support the Nigerian Legion, particularly widows, children and dependants of fallen heroes.
Reaffirming the council’s support for veterans, Engr. Inyang recalled that his administration had renovated and completed a befitting Legion House for the Nigerian Legion, Mkpat Enin Chapter, fulfilling a promise made the previous year in solidarity with veterans and their families.
He also urged residents to embrace ARISE Agenda of the State Government, which promotes unity, peace and development and called for continued support for Governor Umo Eno’s development initiatives.
Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mkpat Enin Area Council, retired Major M. E. Ekaekpe, commended the local government chairman for his support, particularly the renovation of the Legion House and welfare interventions for widows and veterans’ families.
He appealed for initiatives that would enhance economic activities, generate revenue for the council, including improved market operations, banking facilities, slaughterhouse management and regular subventions for the Legion’s office upkeep.
