The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally unveiled, signed the renegotiated 2025 Agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), a move aimed at repositioning public universities, ensuring lasting industrial harmony in the sector.
The agreement was unveiled on Tuesday at a ceremony in Abuja attended by key stakeholders from government, organized labour, the National Assembly and the academic community.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, described the agreement as a major milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that it provides a robust framework to prevent recurring industrial actions and guarantee uninterrupted academic calendars.
According to him, the agreement comprehensively aligns all critical components required for a functional, competitive and globally relevant university system, marking the first time such provisions have been captured in a single document.
A key feature of the agreement is a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff emoluments, effective from January 1, 2026. The salary adjustment, approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, will be implemented through the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, which covers research publications, conferences, internet access, professional memberships and books.
The agreement also introduces a Professorial Credit Allowance of ₦1.8 million annually for professors, while readers will receive between ₦840,000 and ₦870,000. In addition, academic allowances have been restructured and will now be tied strictly to duties performed.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the agreement as a renewed covenant based on dialogue, mutual respect and shared responsibility, noting that sustained engagement was key to achieving consensus.
Other speakers, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, members of the National Assembly and ASUU leadership, commended the amicable resolution of long-standing issues and called for faithful implementation of the agreement.
