The Federal Government has commenced the recruitment of young medical professionals to serve as National Health Fellows, part of a presidential initiative aimed at cultivating a new generation of leaders in Nigeria’s health sector.

The programme targets thirteen youths from each of Nasarawa State’s local government areas, aiming to strengthen local capacity for health system reforms and enhance service delivery, particularly in rural communities.

Implemented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in partnership with state health ministries and development partners, the National Health Fellows programme equips young professionals with leadership and management skills within primary healthcare facilities across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria. Each local government area will host one health fellow.

The selection panel for Nasarawa State is currently assessing applicants on areas of competence critical to improving healthcare delivery in rural communities. Officials emphasise that recruitment will be merit-based, ensuring fairness, transparency, and credibility.

Successful applicants will serve a one-year term as National Health Fellows, gaining practical experience and leadership training designed to enhance youth participation in healthcare governance.

This initiative reflects both national and state-level commitment to youth empowerment and leadership development in Nigeria’s health sector.
