Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has dismissed as false and malicious a media report alleging that Local Government Chairmen in the state rejected “pilfered” federal allocations.

In a press statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, ALGON described the report published by The Crest Newspaper as a gross misrepresentation of facts, insisting that no such incident ever occurred.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no Local Government Chairman in Akwa Ibom State rejected any federal allocation,” the Association stated, adding that the claim was aimed at misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension.

ALGON further described as unfounded and illogical the suggestion that Local Government Chairmen would challenge a Governor who has consistently demonstrated strong support for the local government system.

The Association clarified that what actually occurred was a shortfall in federal allocation, which was promptly addressed by the Akwa Ibom State Government through the provision of grants to Local Governments to cushion the impact and ensure uninterrupted administration at the grassroots.

According to ALGON, Local Government Councils across the state are up to date in the payment of salaries and statutory entitlements, including the payment of the 13th-month salary to workers in December, reflecting the priority placed on workers’ welfare.

The statement also acknowledged the intervention of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, in assisting with the payment of backlog gratuities owed to Local Government retirees, particularly following the shortfall in the November federal allocation shared in December.

ALGON noted that the practice of augmenting Local Government allocations in times of shortfall is not new, stressing that it predates the current administration.

The Association urged media organisations to uphold professional standards, verify information before publication, and avoid sensational reporting capable of undermining public confidence.

ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, good governance, and sustained collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government to drive development across the state.
