ARMY TROOPS RESCUE 18 PASSENGERS AFTER BOAT HIJACKING ON NIGERIA – CAMEROON WATERWAYS

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have successfully rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following a hijacking incident, involving a passenger boat travelling from Nigeria to Cameroon.

The incident occurred on January 11, 2026, when suspected sea pirates operating with two speed boats and a wooden boat intercepted, hijacked the passenger vessel. The victims were abducted along the Kombo Fishing Port area within Cameroonian waterways.

According to military sources, a distress call was received shortly after the attack, prompting an immediate response by troops of 13 Brigade deployed at Ikang. The soldiers swiftly pursued the assailants, leading to a gun exchange on the waterways.

During the encounter, one of the pirates’ speed boats capsized, forcing the attackers to abandon their captives, fled into nearby creeks. All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.

The Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P O Alimikhena, commended the troops for their swift and professional conduct during the operation.

“This successful rescue operation demonstrates the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our men and women towards protecting lives, ensure the safety of our waterways. We will continue to dominate our operational environment and safeguard our citizens against all criminal elements,” he said.

Brigadier General Alimikhena also called on members of the public to continue supporting security forces by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community cooperation remains vital to combating criminal activities across Cross River State and its waterways.

The operation highlights the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to secure regional waterways and protect civilians from maritime crimes, particularly along border routes frequently targeted by criminal elements.
