US refiner Phillips 66 has agreed to acquire the assets and infrastructure of the Lindsey Oil Refinery in northern England following the liquidation of the site.

The company said the acquisition will allow key storage, infrastructure facilities from the Lindsey site to be integrated into its Humber Refinery complex. This move is expected to improve supply, flexibility, support both traditional and renewable fuel production.

The Lindsey refinery ceased operations in July last year after its former owner fell into insolvency, placing hundreds of jobs risk. Phillips 66 confirmed that after a detailed assessment during the bidding process, it decided that restarting the refinery as a standalone operation was not viable in its current condition.

While the value of the transaction was not disclosed, the company stated that it would conduct further technical, strategic evaluations of the newly acquired assets in the coming months to determine the best integration approach within its UK operations.

Authorities overseeing the liquidation process noted that none of the submitted bids proposed a return to full refining operations at the Lindsey site in the near future. Existing staff at the facility are expected to remain employed until the end of March, pending further decisions on the future use of the site.

UK energy authorities welcomed the development, saying the acquisition would strengthen domestic fuel supply capacity and contribute to energy security, while also creating construction and infrastructure related jobs over the coming years.

Labour unions, however, have expressed concern over the long term employment outlook, urging that the site should remain an active part of the UK energy system rather than being reduced solely to storage use.

Phillips 66 said it is purchasing assets only and not the companies previously operating the refinery, adding that the number of new roles which may be created will depend on future integration plans.
