The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 7 to deliver a ruling on the bail applications filed by a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz, and his wife, Bashir Asabe, who are standing trial over alleged money laundering.

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the matter after counsel to the defendants, Joseph Daudu, SAN, and counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, adopted their written addresses, presented oral arguments before the court.

The EFCC, in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, listed Malami, his wife and son as the first, second and third defendants, respectively, in the case bordering on alleged financial crimes.

According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants are accused of engaging in multiple suspicious financial transactions and attempting to conceal the alleged unlawful origin of billions of naira through various bank accounts and property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano and Kebbi States.

The Commission alleged that the offences were committed between 2015 and 2025, a period that spans Malami’s tenure as Attorney-General of the Federation under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The EFCC further alleged that the defendants conspired to disguise the origin of funds, indirectly acquired properties, retained large sums of money they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activity, contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2011 (as amended) and the 2022 Act.

Justice Nwite ordered that the defendants remain subject to existing court directives, pending the ruling on their bail application.
