The Federal Fire Service (FFS) began 2026 on full operational alert, responding to multiple fire incidents nationwide in the early hours of the New Year, following a no-leave directive issued by the Controller General, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi.
The directive, released in December, barred firefighters from proceeding on holiday throughout the festive period and proved critical in the Service’s rapid response to emergencies.
In the Federal Capital Territory, firefighters were deployed at 12:23a.m. on January 1 to a fire outbreak at Cake Hot Restaurant, River Plate Park, Wuse, Abuja. Working alongside the FCT Fire Service, crews successfully contained the blaze, preventing a major disaster. No lives were lost, no injuries recorded. Property valued at about ₦1.5 billion was saved, while losses were estimated at ₦500 million. Preliminary findings linked the fire to objects thrown during New Year celebrations.
Firefighters also responded to incidents in Lagos, Imo, Gombe, Kwara, and other states during the same period.
However, a tragic incident was recorded in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where a residential fire claimed the life of an 11-year-old child. Property worth about ₦10 million was saved, while losses were estimated at ₦20 million. The fire was linked to a candle left unattended.
Controller General Adeyemi expressed sympathy to affected victims, renewed calls for Nigerians to avoid fireworks, candles, and open flames indoors, especially during the harmattan season. He also advised the public to unplug electrical appliances when not in use and to report fire outbreaks promptly to the Federal Fire Service via 08032003557 or the nearest fire station.
The early New Year response, the Service said, underscores the importance of preparedness, public cooperation in preventing avoidable fire disasters.
