Former Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has died at the age of 52.
Family sources confirmed on Thursday that Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a medical facility in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness.
The lawmaker had reportedly battled health challenges since returning to the Senate following his re-election in 2023. Over the course of his illness, he sought medical attention in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and India.
The exact nature of the ailment was not publicly disclosed.
Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019, he secured a second term in 2023, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to serve two consecutive terms since the creation of Nasarawa State. He was elected under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Before his elevation to the National Assembly, Akwashiki built a notable legislative career in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served multiple terms. During his time in the state legislature, he held key leadership positions, including Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was widely regarded as a grassroots politician with a strong connection to his constituents. He was particularly known for advocating projects aimed at improving local welfare.
During his tenure in the Senate, he was actively involved in legislative and oversight activities, with a focus on rural development, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development across Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
Political leaders, associates, community stakeholders across the district have continued to pay tribute to his service, describing his death as a significant loss to Nasarawa State, the nation.
The family is yet to announce details of his burial arrangements.
