A human rights lawyer and counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has raised alarm over what he described as an “imminent, grave threat” to his life and the safety of his family, allegedly involving some influential individuals in Anambra State.

In a petition dated December 29, 2025, made available to journalists on Tuesday, Ejiofor, a native of Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state, said it had become imperative to formally draw public, international attention to what he termed a “calculated campaign of intimidation, hostility” against him.

He explained that he was compelled to issue a public alarm – following what he described as persistent, escalating threats to his life and that of his family, noting that the initial alert attracted widespread concern, calls, messages from well-meaning Nigerians across different segments of society.

According to him, rather than subside, the threats allegedly intensified, prompting him to place a detailed factual, historical account of events before the public.

Ejiofor disclosed that he is currently at his ancestral home in Oraifite with his family for the Christmas and New Year festivities, adding that, given the prevailing security challenges in the state and the threats against him, he formally requested security coverage from a senior commander of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG), also known as Udo-ga-Achi.

He stated that duly constituted AVG personnel were officially deployed to his residence in an operational vehicle, properly identified and armed in line with their mandate, stressing that the deployment was lawful, procedural.

“As those familiar with my lifestyle can attest, I do not habitually move about with security escorts, nor do I ordinarily request protective details during festive periods, except when it is compellingly needful,” he said.

Ejiofor, however, alleged that shortly after the deployment, certain individuals became agitated, pressured the AVG leadership to withdraw the personnel from his residence. He claimed that within 48 hours, the commander who deployed the operatives received calls from a lawmaker (name withheld), after which the State Commander of the AVG and the President General of the Oraifite Improvement Union were reportedly drawn into the conversation.

According to the petition, the discussions centred on demands for the immediate withdrawal of the security personnel, with alleged threats that failure to comply could lead to an invasion of his residence and the forcible disarming of the operatives.

He said all appeals for the security personnel to remain until the end of the festive period were rejected, allegedly on the directive of an unnamed individual in Oraifite, whom he described as the “principal” behind the actions.

Ejiofor said he subsequently advised the withdrawal of the AVG personnel to avoid any confrontation between them and their superiors, a move he noted left his household “significantly more vulnerable.”

He further alleged that after he raised another public alert on social media, intelligence reports indicated plans to mobilize the police to raid his residence under the guise that the earlier-deployed vigilante operatives were impostors.

According to him, the Anambra State Police Command conducted a fact-finding visit and discovered that his residence was peaceful, that all AVG personnel had already been withdrawn. He commended the police for what he described as professionalism, refusal to be misled.

Ejiofor said he is placing the public, relevant security agencies on notice that the agitation for the withdrawal of security from his residence was driven by “an unmistakably sinister motive.”

He warned that any untoward incident affecting him, or his family during the festive period should not be misrepresented as the work of hoodlums or “unknown gunmen,” insisting that responsibility should be traced to those allegedly behind the withdrawal of security.

He added that he has formally disclosed the identity of the unnamed individual he described as the “Oga” behind the alleged plot to relevant security authorities.

“As I write this statement, let it be clearly recorded that my residence is now more vulnerable than ever. If any harm befalls my household, these individuals should be held responsible,” he stated.
