The Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused youth members of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the assault and public stripping of Dr. Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, in Benin City on Sunday.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PDP, through its Publicity Secretary Dan Osa-Ogbegie, described the attack as premeditated, barbaric, dehumanizing, alleging that APC youths have repeatedly engaged in political violence across the state since last year.
The party called for the identification, arrest, and prosecution of the perpetrators, demanded explanations from both the Edo State Government and the police for failing to protect a citizen.
“The assault and humiliation of Dr. Pedro Obaseki is evil, uncivilised, utterly repugnant,” the PDP said, adding that the incident violated the values of Benin civilization, which is known for dignity, restraint, and respect for human worth.
Reacting, the APC dismissed the allegations, accusing the PDP of politicizing an isolated incident.

In a statement, Acting Publicity Secretary Victor Osehobo said security agencies are handling the matter, insisted that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s security agenda remains firm, effective.
“Crime is crime, violence is violence, no political label offers protection,” the APC added, describing PDP’ claims as “fiction, conjecture, outright political nonsense.”
The Edo State Police Command confirmed that an investigation has commenced.
Police Public Relations Officer Eno Ikoedem stated that Obaseki was rescued at Uwa Primary School, taken to Oba Market Police Station, where Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika visited him multiple times.
No arrests have been made yet, but the police assured the public that those responsible would be apprehended and prosecuted
