The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, has denied issuing any statement in response to allegations made against him by the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
Ahmed, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said he did not authorize the response currently circulating on social media, describing it as false.
At a press briefing held at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, on Sunday, Dangote had called for a full investigation into the source of funds allegedly used by Ahmed to educate his children abroad, urging the regulator to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal to offer a public explanation.
Dangote also petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to probe Ahmed’s financial activities, accusing the regulator of actions that could amount to economic sabotage and undermine investor confidence, particularly in relation to the issuance of fuel importation licences.
On Tuesday, a statement purportedly signed by Ahmed went viral, however, the NMDPRA management subsequently told reporters that the document did not originate from him.
Confirming this, Ahmed said he had deliberately refrained from engaging in public exchanges over the allegations.
“My attention has been drawn to a purported response I was said to have made on the recent allegations against my person. I hereby state categorically that the so-called statement did not emanate from me,” he said.

“While I am aware of the wild, spurious allegations made against me, my family and the frenzy it has generated, as a regulator of a sensitive industry, I have opted not to engage in public brickbats,”Ahmed added.
He said he welcomed Dangote’s decision to take the matter to the ICPC, expressing confidence that the investigation would provide an opportunity to clear his name.
“Thankfully, the person behind the allegations has taken it to a formal investigative institution. I believe that would provide an opportunity to dispassionately distil the issues, to clear my name,” he said.
