Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 119 civilians abducted by suspected terrorists and recovered eight vehicles during a security operation in Borno State.

The military disclosed the development in an operational report made available to journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

According to the report, troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion detected suspected terrorists abducting travellers along the Dutsen Kura–Bulazarma–Kamuya road through surveillance cameras.

The soldiers subsequently mobilised through the Mangari–Dora axis in Biu Local Government Area and engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon their captives and flee.

The rescued civilians, comprising 69 men, 35 women and 15 children, were reportedly reunited with their families.

Eight vehicles abandoned by the fleeing attackers were also recovered.

During the operation, troops discovered an improvised explosive device around the Bam–Buratai Junction–Bulazarma area. The military reported that the explosive was safely handled by its personnel.

In a separate development, a suspected member of Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) surrendered to troops of the 202 Battalion at Ngurusoye Village in Bama Local Government Area.

The military said the suspect fled his group’s enclave in Bula Daloye following clashes with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and worsening conditions within the group.

He reportedly surrendered with an FN rifle and seven rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and remains in military custody.

Also in Borno, troops working with members of the Hybrid Force arrested a suspected terrorist informant at Ngamdu Town on November 5.

Meanwhile, soldiers of the Army Headquarters Garrison reportedly foiled an attempted abduction of a retired senior military officer and his son at Kurudu Phase Five, Abuja.

The attackers allegedly invaded the residence at about 4:05 a.m. on Saturday, inflicting knife injuries on the victims before fleeing following military intervention.

Both victims were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

In Plateau State, troops of Operation Enduring Peace arrested two suspected burglars at Doi Community in Jos South Local Government Area.

The suspects, allegedly attempting to steal chickens from a poultry facility, were handed over to the police.

Similarly, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke arrested a herder over alleged unlawful grazing on farmland in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

The military said the operations formed part of continuing efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
