The Lagos State Police Command has disarmed and detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident that claimed the life of a young girl and left another child injured in Ajegunle, Lagos State.

The deceased, identified as Omole Taiwo, was reportedly struck by a bullet discharged during a police operation to contain a violent confrontation between rival groups in the Nosamu area.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said police operatives had been deployed following reports of a violent clash over toll collection.

According to Adebisi, the confrontation involved two groups identified as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, whose members were allegedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

During the operation, ASP Olajide reportedly discharged his firearm, with the bullet striking two young girls.

The victims were immediately taken to Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Taiwo was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where medical personnel pronounced her dead.

The second victim remains hospitalised and was reported to be in stable condition.

The police command expressed sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Adebisi confirmed that the officer involved had been disarmed and detained pending the outcome of an investigation.

She added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation is expected to establish how the firearm was discharged, determine whether established operational procedures were followed and identify any criminal or disciplinary responsibility.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, visited the deceased girl’s family to express his condolences and assure them of the command’s commitment to accountability.

He pledged that any officer found culpable would face appropriate consequences in accordance with the law.

The command also appealed to members of the public with relevant information about the incident to assist investigators.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, maintaining public safety and ensuring accountability among police personnel.

As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain subject to official determination.
