Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has warned Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso that Brazilian winger Estêvão Willian could create a difficult selection dilemma following his impressive performance against Manchester United.

The 19-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over United at Stamford Bridge last Saturday, producing a performance that attracted praise from Gerrard.

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, the former England midfielder highlighted Estêvão’s attacking qualities, particularly his direct approach, creativity and willingness to attempt shots at goal.

Gerrard described the youngster as exciting to watch and suggested that his performance had strengthened his case for regular involvement in Chelsea’s starting lineup.

He explained that Alonso could face a difficult decision when Brazilian forward João Pedro returns from a thigh injury, given the competition for attacking positions.

Gerrard noted that Pedro Neto also remains an important member of the squad, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are competing for places in Chelsea’s attack.

According to him, accommodating five attacking players in four available positions could become increasingly challenging for Alonso.

Estêvão impressed against Manchester United, registering six attempts on goal, including three on target, and creating three chances for his teammates.

The Brazilian also had two goals disallowed for offside during the encounter.

Despite failing to score, his attacking contribution earned applause from Chelsea supporters when he was substituted in the 87th minute.

Alonso subsequently praised the youngster’s performance, saying he had responded positively to the opportunity to start.

The Chelsea manager explained that Estêvão had been informed beforehand that he would feature against United and had demonstrated his readiness to compete for more playing time.

Before the match, the Brazilian had made six Premier League appearances this season, accumulating fewer than 50 minutes on the pitch.

His limited involvement had prompted questions about his role under Alonso, although the manager maintained that opportunities would come as the campaign progressed.

João Pedro is expected to remain unavailable until after the November international break as he continues recovering from his injury.

With Chelsea preparing for their next league encounter against Sunderland, Estêvão’s performance has increased competition for attacking positions.

Gerrard believes the youngster has given Alonso a positive selection challenge, with his recent display making a strong case for further opportunities.
