A 100-level female student of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, who was abducted by suspected kidnappers over the weekend, has regained her freedom and is receiving medical attention.

The student was abducted on Saturday, October 31, during an attack on an off-campus residential area in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Another person was reportedly shot and injured during the incident, which raised fresh concerns about the safety of students living outside the university premises.

Confirming the student’s release to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Masara Kim, said a joint security operation had contributed to her recovery.

According to Kim, the university collaborated with security personnel to locate the abducted student and secure her release.

He explained that the suspected kidnappers abandoned their captive after noticing the approach of the security team.

The university spokesperson disclosed that the student had subsequently been taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment.

He did not provide further details about her medical condition or indicate whether she sustained injuries during the abduction.

Kim commended the security personnel involved in the operation, describing their response as important to the student’s recovery.

He also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to working with security agencies to protect students and staff within the university and surrounding communities.

The incident has renewed concerns about security in residential areas around Plateau State University, particularly among students who depend on accommodation outside the campus.

Earlier reports indicated that the institution could accommodate approximately 1,000 students in its hostels despite having a student population approaching 20,000.

University officials have attributed the accommodation shortage to financial constraints and acknowledged the need to expand hostel facilities and strengthen security arrangements.

The institution has also indicated its willingness to continue engaging government authorities and security agencies to address the challenges.

Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the abduction remain under investigation, with no confirmed announcement of arrests connected to the attack.

The condition of the other person reportedly injured during the incident has not been publicly clarified.

As of the latest report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued a detailed public statement on the student’s recovery.

The university maintained that the safety and welfare of its students remained a priority as efforts continued to improve security around the institution.
