French football star Kylian Mbappé has lost endorsement deals with major Chinese companies following the circulation of a video in which he appeared to joke about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward faced criticism on Chinese social media after footage emerged showing him discussing an internet meme featuring his face superimposed on an image of Mao.

In the video, Mbappé appeared to describe the historical figure as a Chinese dictator while recalling one of the funniest memes he had seen about himself.

The remarks triggered criticism in China, where Mao remains a politically significant and sensitive historical figure.

On Tuesday, Chinese beverage manufacturer Dongpeng announced the immediate termination of its commercial relationship with Mbappé, citing its opposition to remarks considered offensive to national sentiments.

The company said it maintained a zero-tolerance position towards conduct that offended national feelings.

Mengniu, one of China’s largest dairy producers, subsequently announced a similar decision, confirming that it had ended all cooperation with the French international.

The company said it strongly opposed statements or actions considered disrespectful to the Chinese people.

Chinese cheese producer Milkground also announced the termination of its partnership with Mbappé, bringing the number of companies publicly reported to have severed ties to at least three.

The controversy attracted widespread attention on Weibo, China’s major social media platform, where discussions about the companies’ decisions became trending topics.

Chinese football media outlet Dongqiudi also criticised the remarks, describing them as offensive to Chinese football supporters and the wider public.

Mao Zedong, who died in 1976, led the Communist Party to victory in China’s civil war and established the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

Although he remains an important figure in China’s official political history, his leadership is also associated with policies and campaigns that caused widespread suffering and loss of life.

The video controversy highlights the commercial risks international sports personalities can face when their public comments become politically sensitive in major overseas markets.

Mbappé has previously appeared in promotional campaigns for Chinese consumer brands, including beverages and dairy products.

However, the authenticity and full context of the circulating footage have not been independently established.

As of Tuesday, Mbappé and his representatives had not publicly responded to the latest controversy.

The financial implications of the terminated endorsement agreements have also not been disclosed.
