United States President Donald Trump has criticised Norway over its failure to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, using vulgar language to describe the country and declaring that Norwegian immigrants were not welcome in the United States.
Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” Trump told supporters.
The president linked his criticism to the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him this year’s Peace Prize, despite his repeated claims that his diplomatic efforts deserved international recognition.

Trump also suggested that his dissatisfaction with the award should influence his position on immigration from Norway.
Speaking about immigrants from different countries, he said he would exclude Norwegians because he had not received the prize.
“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he declared.
However, there was no indication that the Trump administration had introduced or was preparing to introduce immigration restrictions specifically targeting Norwegian nationals.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised Pillay for her contributions to international law, human rights protection and efforts to strengthen accountability for serious international crimes.
Trump had previously criticised the committee’s decision, describing his exclusion as an embarrassment and arguing that his involvement in international peace initiatives merited the award.
Responding to the latest controversy on Monday, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide emphasised that the Nobel Committee operates independently of the Norwegian government.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent,” Eide told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
The minister reiterated that the Norwegian government does not determine the recipient of the annual award.
The Nobel Peace Prize is selected by a five-member committee appointed by Norway’s parliament, but the committee makes its decisions independently.
Trump’s comments have revived attention to his previous use of derogatory language when discussing foreign countries.
During his first presidential term in 2018, he faced criticism over reported vulgar remarks concerning Haiti and several African nations.
Despite Trump’s criticism, Norway remains among the world’s wealthiest countries by gross domestic product per capita.
The latest exchange comes as Trump campaigns for Republican candidates ahead of the US congressional elections, with immigration and foreign policy featuring prominently in his political speeches.
