The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the distribution of brand-new 2026 Toyota Prado SUVs to selected youth leaders for political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.
The opposition party alleged that seven vehicles displayed in a video shared by APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, were worth approximately ₦1.015 billion.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the NDC estimated the cost of each SUV at ₦145 million, describing the reported expenditure as excessive amid the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.
The party argued that the distribution raised questions about political spending at a time when citizens were being encouraged to endure the effects of the Federal Government’s economic reforms.
It accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of prioritising political interests over the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
However, the party did not provide documentary evidence establishing the actual purchase prices or proving that public funds were used to acquire the vehicles.
Israel had earlier announced the presentation of the SUVs to selected APC youth leaders, explaining that the vehicles were intended to support grassroots mobilisation activities.

A video accompanying his announcement showed seven vehicles.
The APC youth leader also expressed appreciation to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for what he described as her continued support for the party structure under his leadership.
He pledged to intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly at the polling-unit level.
The announcement attracted criticism from social media users who questioned the cost of the vehicles and whether such expenditure was appropriate during a period of economic hardship.
Some commentators argued that resources of that magnitude could support employment initiatives, small businesses and other programmes benefiting young Nigerians.
Others questioned the source of funding for the vehicles and called for greater transparency.

The NDC also used its statement to promote its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying he would prioritise reducing the cost of governance if elected.
The party urged Nigerians to consider government spending and economic conditions when making electoral decisions in 2027.
As of Sunday, the actual purchase price of the SUVs, the identities of all beneficiaries and the source of funding had not been independently established.
The controversy has renewed public discussion about campaign expenditure, political accountability and transparency in the use of resources ahead of the general election.
