Iran’s military has claimed that its air defence forces shot down an American-made drone over the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington over the possibility of renewed military strikes.

The Iranian Army announced the incident on Sunday, according to the country’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The military identified the unmanned aerial vehicle as a US-made Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System, commonly known as LUCAS.

According to the army’s public relations department, the aircraft was intercepted and destroyed by air defence systems operating under Iran’s integrated national air defence network.

The Iranian authorities did not immediately provide detailed information about the drone’s mission, the circumstances surrounding its presence in Iranian airspace or whether debris had been recovered.

There was also no immediate independent confirmation of the aircraft’s identity or the reported interception from the United States military.

The incident occurred amid heightened uncertainty over relations between Washington and Tehran, with President Donald Trump raising the possibility of additional military action against Iran.

Speaking on Saturday, Trump indicated that the United States could launch further strikes as early as Sunday or reach a diplomatic agreement with Iranian authorities.

The American president suggested that Washington was considering its options but did not announce a final decision on military action.

His comments followed reports of increased American military preparations in the Middle East.

According to The Wall Street Journal, US naval forces operating in the Arabian Sea have been replenishing weapons and conducting flight operations as Washington considers the possibility of renewed strikes.

The report highlighted activities aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier strike group, including the movement of aircraft and the resupply of military equipment.

American officials cited in the report indicated that military preparations were intended to preserve operational readiness should the president authorise further action.

However, the preparations did not establish that a new attack had been ordered.

Bandar Abbas is a strategically important Iranian port city near the Strait of Hormuz, a major international shipping route for oil and other commercial cargo.

Military developments around the area have attracted international attention because of their potential implications for maritime security and regional stability.

The latest incident comes as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent another escalation of the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Although Iranian authorities have reported the destruction of the drone, the circumstances of the incident remain unclear.

The possibility of further American military action also remains unresolved, with Washington continuing to weigh diplomatic and military options.
