The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned its personnel against escorting politicians during campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, directing officers assigned to campaign venues to concentrate strictly on traffic management and road safety.

The directive was issued by the Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC Zone RS6, Assistant Corps Marshal Abimbola Owolabi, during her maiden official visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday, October 21.

Owolabi cautioned officers against using patrol vehicles, sirens and other official resources for political activities or private engagements, including weddings and funeral processions.

She emphasised that FRSC personnel must not lead political convoys or serve as personal escorts to politicians, stressing that the corps’ operational resources should be deployed exclusively for authorised responsibilities.

According to the zonal commander, officers assigned to political campaign venues should focus on preventing traffic congestion, ensuring orderly movement of vehicles and reducing the risk of road crashes.

She maintained that the corps’ primary responsibility remained protecting lives and property through effective traffic management and enforcement of road safety regulations.

Owolabi also warned against corruption, extortion and other forms of professional misconduct, noting that such activities could undermine public confidence in the agency.

She urged patrol teams and other operational personnel to demonstrate accountability, discipline and respect for members of the public while carrying out their duties.

The zonal commander further advised officers to prioritise their personal safety during enforcement operations and avoid unnecessary confrontations with motorists.

She explained that professionalism, patience and discretion were essential when handling potentially volatile situations that could result in physical assaults or damage to official property.

On emergency management, Owolabi called for stronger collaboration with private operators to ensure the prompt removal of broken-down vehicles and other obstructions from major highways.

She also directed personnel to intensify road safety education, improve emergency response and strengthen rescue operations to reduce accidents and fatalities.

The FRSC official stressed the importance of maintaining proper administrative procedures, including accurate documentation of requests for operational support and timely handling of official correspondence.

She additionally encouraged officers to prioritise their health and take advantage of available health insurance arrangements to maintain their physical well-being.

Addressing members of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association, Owolabi urged them to continue supporting their spouses in carrying out their professional responsibilities.

The directive reinforces the need for FRSC personnel to maintain professional neutrality and concentrate on their statutory road safety duties as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 elections.
