Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has announced a partnership with Google Cloud to make its advanced AI models and Codex coding agent available to enterprise customers, expanding access to its technology through one of its major competitors.

The agreement, announced Wednesday, October 21, will let businesses access OpenAI’s frontier AI models through Google Cloud’s Model Garden and buy them directly from the Google Cloud Marketplace.

The initial offering includes GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, designed to support complex reasoning, software development, automated workflows and everyday business operations.

The companies said the integration would allow customers to use existing Google Cloud spending commitments to pay for OpenAI’s services, reducing the need for separate commercial arrangements.

Under the partnership, businesses in all industries will be able to use OpenAI’s technology through Google Cloud’s security infrastructure, data governance systems, and enterprise access controls.

This is expected to support organisations developing AI-powered applications while maintaining oversight of sensitive information and operational requirements.

OpenAI’s Codex coding agent will also be integrated into the platform, enabling developers to automate software engineering tasks, build applications and manage complex programming workflows.

The integration is initially being offered through a limited private preview for selected enterprise customers, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks.

Speaking on the development, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman described the collaboration as an important step towards making the company’s advanced models available through platforms businesses already use.

Google Cloud Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kurian also emphasised the importance of providing customers with access to different artificial intelligence models according to their business requirements.

The agreement represents a significant development in the relationship between OpenAI and Google, which compete in artificial intelligence products while increasingly cooperating on computing infrastructure and enterprise technology.

The partnership follows changes to OpenAI’s commercial arrangements with Microsoft, which previously held exclusive distribution rights to certain OpenAI technologies.

OpenAI has since expanded access to its models through Amazon Web Services and now Google Cloud, giving enterprise customers additional options for deploying its systems.

However, Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner.

For Google Cloud, the arrangement strengthens its strategy of offering a broad selection of artificial intelligence technologies, including competing models, through a unified platform.

For OpenAI, it creates another commercial channel to reach organisations investing in advanced AI capabilities.

The development also highlights a wider industry trend in which leading cloud providers are becoming important distributors of artificial intelligence technology.

Both companies said additional integrations are planned, including access to OpenAI models through Google’s AI development tools.

Although selected customers can already participate in the private preview, the companies have not announced a specific date for general availability.
