Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Italian side Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, deepening the club’s struggles and increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

The defeat at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia saw former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fàbregas guide Como to an emphatic victory, leaving United without a win in seven consecutive matches across competitions.

Argentine midfielder Nico Paz delivered an outstanding performance, scoring twice and contributing an assist as the Italian club dominated the encounter.

United’s difficulties began almost immediately when Paz opened the scoring in the second minute, capitalising on defensive weaknesses to give the hosts an early advantage.

Despite attempts to respond, the English side struggled to establish control, with Como maintaining their advantage until halftime.

The situation deteriorated further after the restart when Greek striker Tasos Douvikas doubled Como’s lead in the 49th minute following an assist from Paz.

Eight minutes later, Paz struck again to extend the advantage to 3-0, leaving United facing another damaging European defeat.

Spanish defender Jacobo Ramón added Como’s fourth goal in the 76th minute with a powerful header, effectively ending any hope of a comeback.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee eventually scored a consolation goal for Manchester United in the first minute of stoppage time, converting a delivery from Amad Diallo.

However, the late goal did little to change the outcome of an encounter in which Como had comprehensively outplayed their opponents.

Carrick made several changes during the second half, withdrawing Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos at halftime before replacing captain Bruno Fernandes in the 67th minute.

The substitutions failed to reverse United’s fortunes as the hosts continued to exploit weaknesses in their defensive organisation.

The result marked another disappointing chapter in United’s Champions League campaign, following their earlier defeat against Atletico Madrid.

It also raised further questions about Carrick’s future, with the former United midfielder facing increasing scrutiny over the team’s performances and results.

Carrick acknowledged the travelling supporters after the final whistle, repeatedly gesturing apologetically towards them following the defeat.

For Como, the victory represented a significant achievement under Fàbregas, whose side demonstrated attacking efficiency and tactical discipline against one of European football’s historically prominent clubs.

The defeat leaves Manchester United searching for answers ahead of their next domestic fixture, with growing pressure to reverse their poor run of results.

No official decision concerning Carrick’s position had been announced as of Wednesday evening.
