Rangers International Football Club have formally petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over alleged vandalism and misconduct involving supporters of Algerian club MC Alger during their CAF Champions League qualifying encounter in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Nigerian champions confirmed the development on Monday, October 19, following their 2-0 victory over MC Alger in Sunday’s first-leg match at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex.

In a statement, Rangers accused some visiting supporters of damaging a stadium entrance gate, destroying seats in the covered stands and gaining unauthorised access to the venue without paying admission fees.

The club also raised concerns about other incidents of disorder reportedly involving the travelling supporters.

Rangers said the incidents prompted a formal complaint to CAF, requesting urgent intervention and appropriate security arrangements ahead of the return fixture scheduled for Friday, October 23, in Algiers.

The club maintained that the safety of players, officials and supporters must remain a priority throughout the competition.

The allegations emerged after a dramatic encounter in which Rangers overcame an early numerical disadvantage to defeat the Algerian champions.

Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh received a red card in the 13th minute, leaving Rangers with 10 players for much of the first half.

MC Alger were subsequently reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Oussama Benhaoua in the second half.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Rangers broke the deadlock through Kenneth Igboke’s late penalty before James Emo doubled their advantage three minutes later.

The victory gives the Flying Antelopes a two-goal cushion heading into the decisive second leg, with qualification for the Champions League group stage at stake.

Rangers reaffirmed their commitment to fair play, respect for football regulations and the protection of everyone involved in continental matches.

The club also appealed to its supporters to remain calm and disciplined while preparations continue for the trip to Algeria.

As of Monday, Rangers said they were awaiting CAF’s response to their petition.

The allegations against MC Alger supporters have not been established through a publicly announced CAF disciplinary decision, and no sanctions have been confirmed.
