Qatar has disclosed plans to announce a new regional defence partnership as escalating tensions across the Middle East intensify concerns over military security, aerial threats and regional stability.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, revealed the initiative during the Global Security Forum, where he outlined Qatar’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities.

According to the minister, the proposed partnership follows a comprehensive review of the country’s security infrastructure, particularly its air defence systems, counter-drone capabilities and cybersecurity arrangements.

He explained that evolving security threats had made stronger regional cooperation necessary, with participating countries expected to improve their ability to respond to emerging challenges.

Sheikh Saoud also highlighted Qatar’s longstanding military cooperation with the United States, crediting existing defence arrangements with helping regional forces intercept more than 90 per cent of incoming aerial threats during recent hostilities.

However, details of the proposed alliance, including participating countries, operational responsibilities and the timetable for its formal establishment, have not been disclosed.

ADVERTISMENT

The development comes amid renewed instability across several parts of the Middle East.

In Yemen, a spokesperson for the Houthi movement claimed that Saudi Arabian aircraft carried out 110 air and missile strikes against Houthi positions within 24 hours.

The reported number of strikes has not been independently confirmed, while the latest fighting has raised concerns about further escalation in the region.

Meanwhile, Israeli security forces reportedly arrested 10 suspects following violent confrontations in the occupied West Bank over the weekend.

The incidents have added to concerns about worsening security conditions and the possibility of further unrest.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also expressed optimism that discussions at an upcoming Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Baghdad could help address regional security challenges and diplomatic disagreements.

Qatar’s proposed defence initiative reflects growing efforts among Middle Eastern countries to strengthen security coordination as governments confront increasingly complex military and geopolitical threats.

The scope and effectiveness of the partnership will become clearer when Doha formally announces its participating members and operational framework.
