US President Donald Trump has said his administration will not launch fresh military strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, citing what he described as progress in diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran.

Trump made the announcement on Thursday, October 8, following reports that the United States was considering additional military action against Iranian targets.

The reports had contributed to uncertainty in global energy markets, where oil prices have remained sensitive to developments in the conflict.

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said discussions with Iranian authorities were progressing, but he gave no details about the negotiations or any agreements reached.

He maintained that the existing US blockade against Iran would remain in force despite the decision to suspend further attacks ahead of the elections.

The announcement followed reports that the White House had requested military options from the Pentagon for possible operations against Iran.

However, Trump’s latest statement indicated that his administration did not intend to authorise additional strikes before the November 3 polls.

The development comes amid continuinongoing surroundiaroundit of Hormuz, a major international shipping route through which significant volumes of global oil supplies transit, and amid hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia have also contributed to concerns about regional security and energy transportation.

On Wednesday, October 7, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that an oil tanker off Qatar’s northern coast had been struck by multiple projectiles.

The agency reported casualties but did not immediately provide a confirmed figure.

The continuing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has placed pressure on international energy markets, with rising fuel prices becoming an issue in American political discussions.

Trump has repeatedly maintained that the United States has achieved significant military successes against Iran. However, the conflict remains unresolved, and the prospects for a comprehensive diplomatic settlement are uncertain.

The president’s announcement also comes as Republicans and Democrats prepare for the November 3 congressional elections, which will determine control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Trump has increased his political activities in support of Republican candidates, warning that Democratic control of the House could lead to renewed congressional investigations and impeachment proceedings against his administration.

Meanwhile, the president has defended earlier remarks suggesting that Iran could threaten American cities, including Los Angeles and San Diego.

In a subsequent statement, Trump accused sections of the media of misrepresenting his comments and argued that temporary increases in petrol prices should be weighed against what he described as the risks associated with Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

His administration has continued to present its military and economic pressure on Tehran as part of efforts to address those concerns.

Although Trump has ruled out fresh strikes before the midterm elections, he has not announced a permanent cessation of military operations or the removal of existing sanctions and restrictions.

The possibility of further military action after November 3 therefore remains unresolved, while diplomatic efforts continue.
