Lionel Messi is set to make his final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday as the world champions face Benin Republic in a farewell friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The 39-year-old will bring an end to a 21-year international career after announcing his retirement from national-team football in August.

Messi enters the farewell match as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and all-time leading scorer, with 125 goals in 207 matches. His appearance against Benin is expected to take his international tally to 208 games.

The Argentine Football Association arranged the match to give the former Barcelona star a formal send-off in front of home supporters following his decision to end his international career.

Around 85,000 supporters are expected at the Monumental, with members of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families also invited to participate in the occasion.

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and endured years of disappointment with the national team before eventually captaining the country to major international honours.

He led Argentina to the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 and their 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar.

The forward is expected to wear Argentina’s iconic No. 10 shirt for the final time against Benin. Coach Lionel Scaloni has said a decision on the future wearer of the number will be considered after Messi’s farewell.

Messi’s departure will leave Argentina facing the task of transitioning to a new generation, with several younger players already being integrated into the national team.

Despite retiring from international football, Messi is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

Tuesday’s match will formally close one of the longest and most decorated international careers in Argentine football history.
