The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to adequate, affordable and sustainable housing across the state.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Amairigha Edward-Hart, stated this during an event in Port Harcourt to commemorate the 2026 World Habitat Day.

Edward-Hart, who represented the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Soibitein Duke-Harry, said the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara remained focused on improving residents’ living conditions through housing and urban development initiatives.

He said the government’s approach was aimed at addressing housing needs while promoting sustainable development in response to the state’s growing population and urban expansion.

Speaking on the theme, “Concerted Efforts to Address the Housing Deficit in the State,” guest speaker Dr Mina Aprioku stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to tackle the housing shortage.

Aprioku said meeting the state’s housing demand would require increased investment in quality and affordable homes, alongside sustainable planning capable of supporting long-term urban growth.

The event also highlighted some housing projects being pursued in the state, including the 20,000-unit RIV/TAF City Housing Project, which is targeted at low- and middle-income earners.

Other projects highlighted included the Civil Servants’ Quarters and Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters.

Officials said the projects form part of broader efforts to improve housing availability and create more sustainable residential communities across Rivers State.

The 2026 World Habitat Day observance focused attention on the importance of adequate housing and the need for governments, developers and other stakeholders to work together to expand access to decent shelter.
