The European Union and the Inter-Party Advisory Council have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to strictly enforce electoral rules and strengthen measures aimed at delivering credible, free and fair elections in 2027.

The call was made on Tuesday during INEC’s World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja, organised as preparations for the 2027 general elections entered the 100-day countdown.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, urged the electoral commission to build on what he described as progress recorded during the recent Osun State governorship election.

Mignot stressed that credible elections were important to maintaining public confidence in the democratic process and reducing the risk of post-election disputes and violence.

“The only antidote to post-election violence is free, fair and credible elections,” he said.

He maintained that the EU’s interest was in the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process and the welfare of Nigerians rather than support for any particular candidate or political party.

The ambassador urged INEC, political parties and other stakeholders to respect the rules governing the electoral process and ensure that the conduct of the elections strengthens public confidence.

IPAC also called for adherence to electoral regulations and measures capable of protecting the credibility of the polls.

The engagement brought together political party leaders, security agencies, members of the diplomatic community, development partners, civil society organisations, election observers, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media representatives.

INEC is expected to use the engagement to provide updates on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, election logistics and other measures being put in place to safeguard the integrity of the 2027 electoral process.
