Forces aligned with Yemen’s Saudi-backed government have carried out air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas of Sanaa as renewed fighting intensifies and forces more civilians from their homes.

The attacks represent another escalation in Yemen, where government-aligned forces and the Houthis have renewed hostilities across several fronts.

Reports from Yemen indicated that multiple strikes targeted areas in Sanaa, with government-aligned forces describing the locations as military targets. The full extent of damage and casualties was not immediately clear.

The latest escalation comes amid wider tensions involving Iran, the United States and several countries across the Gulf.

US President Donald Trump has signalled that Washington is considering its next move towards Iran, saying the decision would come either “the easy way or the hard way.” He did not provide details of what action his administration was considering.

Tensions have also intensified around important regional shipping routes.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations has recorded a series of recent attacks on commercial vessels around the Strait of Hormuz and waters near Oman. Tankers have reported being struck by unidentified projectiles, while authorities continue investigating the incidents.

The attacks have heightened concerns about the security of commercial shipping and energy supplies passing through one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.

The regional confrontation has also spilt into Saudi Arabia. The Houthis said they launched missiles and drones towards a Saudi Aramco facility near Riyadh in response to strikes on Yemen. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the group’s account.

Fighting elsewhere in the Middle East has continued alongside the escalation in Yemen and the Gulf, adding to concerns that separate conflicts could become increasingly interconnected.

Diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the crises are continuing, but the latest military actions and maritime incidents have increased uncertainty over prospects for de-escalation.
