The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a man identified as Zayyanu Halilu over the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl who was later found to be pregnant.

The command said operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested the suspect on October 2 during a routine patrol around the Airport Bridge Taxi Park.

FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said officers noticed a heavily tinted navy blue Volkswagen parked at the location and approached the vehicle after observing circumstances they considered suspicious.

According to the police, the officers discovered the suspect with the minor and immediately arrested him, while the girl was rescued and taken for appropriate care.

The command said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had allegedly abused the child on several occasions and threatened her against disclosing the incidents.

Police also said a medical examination indicated that the 12-year-old was about three months pregnant. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy as part of the case.

The victim is receiving medical attention and undergoing further assessment, while the suspect remains in police custody.

The command said Halilu would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation. The allegations against him remain subject to determination by a court.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to the safety and welfare of children in their care.

He also encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
