The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, have agreed to strengthen their collaboration to improve Nigeria’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to disasters and other emergencies.
The agreement followed a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Discussions focused on strengthening the longstanding partnership between both agencies in disaster management, search and rescue operations, medical support and emergency response.
Among the areas considered was increased participation of NAF Disaster Response Units in search and rescue exercises, alongside stronger medical cooperation and improved operational preparedness.
The two agencies also explored opportunities for joint training programmes, specialised disaster-management simulations and other capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving coordination during emergencies and humanitarian operations.
Aneke acknowledged NEMA’s role in national disaster management and reaffirmed the Air Force’s readiness to expand cooperation in areas that would enhance the protection of lives and communities.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen coordination between the agencies by combining their respective capabilities in disaster response, humanitarian assistance and emergency management.
The partnership is expected to support faster search and rescue operations, improved humanitarian response and greater preparedness for disasters and other emergencies across the country.
Both agencies are expected to continue developing practical measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s disaster-response capacity and national resilience.
