The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has commenced an investigation into a passenger arrested with $265,000 in allegedly undeclared foreign currency at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State.
The suspect, identified as Adam Musa Adam, was intercepted after arriving in Kano from New Delhi, India, aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET941.
According to the EFCC, the passenger, who was travelling with a Nigerian passport, was intercepted during routine screening by officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
His luggage was subjected to a secondary examination after being flagged using Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology, leading to the discovery of the cash allegedly concealed among his personal belongings.
Customs subsequently handed the suspect and the recovered funds over to the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC for further investigation.
Speaking during the handover, Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu, said moving foreign currency above the legally permitted threshold without declaration could contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
Adamu said the Kano Command had intercepted undeclared foreign currency and other negotiable instruments valued at more than ₦2.5 billion between January and September 2026.
Receiving the suspect, Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Kano Directorate, ACE1 Friday S. Ebelo, said the case demonstrated cooperation between Customs and the anti-graft agency.
Ebelo said the EFCC would investigate the source and circumstances surrounding the funds and determine whether any offence had been committed.
He added that the EFCC and NCS have important roles in protecting Nigeria’s financial system and combating illicit financial flows.
The EFCC said further investigation would determine the appropriate action to be taken in accordance with applicable laws.
