Three women have been killed and another person injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred on Monday afternoon when armed men reportedly stormed the mining site and opened fire on workers before fleeing the area.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the incident, saying three women were killed while another person sustained injuries.
According to Tengwong, the attack has heightened concerns over the safety of residents and people working in the area.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack and ensure they are brought to justice.
A resident of the community, John Silas, also confirmed the incident, saying the gunmen attacked people working at the mining site at about 4 p.m.
Silas said three women were killed during the attack while another person was injured.
He appealed to security agencies to strengthen security around the community and take measures to prevent further attacks.
The identities of the victims had not been disclosed as of Monday evening, and no group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
There was also no immediate statement from the Plateau State Police Command on the incident.
