Nollywood film Black Market has set a Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a single film screening after 51,000 people reportedly completed the screening at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.
The record-breaking event attracted thousands of movie lovers to the Lagos venue, with organisers targeting at least 50,000 simultaneous viewers for the attempt.
According to organisers, the venue had attracted a large crowd several hours before the screening began.
Although the total number of people present was reportedly higher, 51,000 attendees were recognised as qualifying participants after meeting the conditions stipulated for the record attempt, including remaining at the venue throughout the screening.
The achievement surpassed the previous record of 43,624 people, established during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in 2015.
The confirmation prompted celebrations among filmmakers, cast members, organisers and spectators gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square.
Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was among the dignitaries who attended the event, alongside figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry and government.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, Black Market follows the lives of five women drawn into a cross-border smuggling operation before the kidnapping of one of their daughters changes the course of events.
The achievement represents another international milestone for Nigeria’s film industry and places the Lagos screening among the largest cinema gatherings recorded globally.
The record also highlights Nollywood’s expanding audience and the capacity of Nigerian productions to attract large-scale public participation.
With 51,000 qualifying viewers, the Tafawa Balewa Square screening establishes a new benchmark for the largest audience at a single film screening.
