Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have emerged champions of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup after defeating Togo 4-0 in their final match in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory completed a perfect campaign for Nigeria, who won all five matches to finish the tournament with 15 points.
The Flamingos scored 17 goals and conceded only two throughout the competition, becoming the first Nigerian team to win the regional U-17 girls title.
Captain Harmony Chidi led Nigeria’s scoring against Togo with two first-half penalties.
Chidi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before converting another penalty later in the first half to put Nigeria firmly in control.
Oluebube Umejiaku extended the lead in the 67th minute before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the 4-0 victory with Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 90th minute.
Nigeria began the tournament with a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger Republic before defeating Ghana 4-2.
The Flamingos subsequently recorded consecutive 2-0 victories over Burkina Faso and hosts Côte d’Ivoire before completing their campaign with Sunday’s win against Togo.
The triumph represents an improvement on Nigeria’s performance at the inaugural edition of the competition in Ghana in 2024, where the Flamingos finished as runners-up.
Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, congratulated the players and officials, describing five victories from five matches as an impressive achievement.
He expressed confidence that the team’s performance would strengthen preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to the global tournament as they seek to build on their unbeaten WAFU-B campaign.
