Political economist Prof. Pat Utomi has said he would withdraw his support for Peter Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepts a vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
Utomi said his backing for Obi was specifically tied to his pursuit of the presidency and would not extend to him serving as another candidate’s running mate.
“The day he becomes somebody’s vice president, I walk away from his corner,” Utomi said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on January 1.
The remarks have resurfaced amid continuing political discussions over possible alliances and opposition arrangements ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Utomi maintained that his position was based on his view of the type of leadership Nigeria requires rather than personal loyalty to Obi.
He also advocated an age ceiling for Nigerians seeking executive political offices, arguing that presidential and governorship candidates should not be above 70 years.
According to him, older political figures can continue contributing to national development in other capacities, but he believes executive leadership should increasingly make room for a younger generation.
Utomi’s comments come as political negotiations and coalition discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures exploring possible arrangements for the presidential contest.
