At least six people have reportedly been killed and several others injured following renewed hostilities involving Fulani herders and Kamuku farmers in Tashan-Rimi, near Godoro village in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
The latest violence reportedly occurred on Tuesday night amid continuing tensions between the two communities and previous efforts by state and local authorities to restore peace.
Village Head of Tashan-Rimi, Alhaji Garba Mohammed Bissalla, confirmed the incident, alleging that six members of his community were killed during the attack.
He said several others sustained injuries, including Musa Bahago and his son, Hamisu Musa, who were reportedly receiving treatment.
Bissalla expressed concern over the renewed violence, saying residents had expected government intervention following earlier clashes between the communities.
The latest incident comes amid efforts by the Niger State Government, Rafi Local Government authorities and traditional institutions to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
A committee had previously been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the clashes and recommend measures to prevent further violence.
Bissalla, however, alleged that residents had yet to see sufficient action on the ground to prevent renewed attacks.
He appealed to the federal and Niger State governments, security agencies and local authorities to urgently intervene to prevent further loss of lives and restore peace to affected communities.
The traditional leader also alleged that the Kamuku community had suffered repeated attacks over the years, alongside longstanding challenges involving access to basic social amenities.
He linked the latest violence to unresolved tensions arising from previous clashes that reportedly resulted in significant casualties.
However, the Niger State Police Command said it had not received an official report on the latest incident as of the time of filing this report.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he had no official information concerning the reported attack.
The casualty figures and circumstances surrounding the incident could therefore not be independently confirmed by the police at the time of filing this report.
