Chelsea have been charged by the English Football Association over alleged discriminatory behaviour by some of their supporters during last month’s Premier League clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
The charge relates to an incident in the ninth minute of the August 24 fixture, with the FA alleging that Chelsea failed to ensure their supporters did not engage in improper, offensive, abusive or insulting behaviour.
According to the FA, the alleged conduct was discriminatory because it included a reference, whether expressed or implied, to religion or belief.
“Chelsea FC has been charged with breaching FA Rule E21 during the ninth minute of its Premier League fixture against Fulham FC on 24 August,” the FA said.
The governing body further alleged that the club failed to prevent spectators or supporters from behaving improperly and that the conduct contained a discriminatory reference to religion or belief.
The incident reportedly involved sectarian chanting from a section of Chelsea’s travelling supporters.
Following the match, Chelsea contacted supporters who attended the fixture and reiterated the club’s position against discriminatory chanting.
The club warned that supporters found responsible for discriminatory behaviour could face sanctions, including removal from stadiums and suspension from attending matches.
Chelsea also encouraged fans who witness discriminatory language or conduct to report it to matchday stewards or through the club’s designated reporting channels.
The charge stems from a match Chelsea won 3-2, with Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scoring for the visitors, while Josh King and Gonzalo Garcia were on target for Fulham.
