Three men were seen emerging from a New York City sewer near a hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to stay, prompting additional security checks by police ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
Security cameras captured the men coming out of manholes at about 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday before leaving the area in a car.
However, the New York Police Department said there was no indication that the incident was connected to Netanyahu or the UN General Assembly.
The NYPD said it had recorded several similar incidents in recent months involving individuals entering the city’s sewer system, particularly after storms, apparently in search of valuables and scrap metal.
“This incident fits that same criteria,” the police department said, while noting that additional security measures were being taken because of the sensitive location and the UN General Assembly.
The NYPD said the men were not affiliated with any public works crew and that similar individuals had previously been seen emerging from manholes in parts of Brooklyn in late May.
Police said they had deployed a “robust response” to the incidents overnight and were conducting additional security sweeps with federal law enforcement partners.
The investigation remains ongoing, but authorities said they had found no evidence linking the sewer activity to any threat against Netanyahu or the United Nations.
