Jos Electricity Distribution Plc has engaged security agencies to strengthen the protection of its workers in Bauchi following a confrontation between its employees and Nigerian Air Force personnel during the disconnection of electricity supply to NAF residential quarters.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 18, at the NAF residential quarters along Kano Road, Bauchi, while JED personnel were carrying out the disconnection.
The development prompted concerns from the National Union of Electricity Employees over the safety of electricity workers performing official duties.
In a letter to the union, JED Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sediko Douka, acknowledged the confrontation involving NAF personnel and employees of the company’s Bauchi Regional Office and assured workers that management was taking steps to prevent a recurrence.
Douka said JED was liaising with the Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to improve security coordination around its offices, work sites and other locations where employees operate.
“Where required, management will provide armed manpower as an additional protective measure for staff on the ground. The DSS, Police and Civil Defence have declared their willingness at our request,” he said.
Management has also directed operational personnel to comply strictly with established safety procedures and incident-control measures while carrying out their duties.
According to Douka, the company is strengthening communication protocols to reduce misunderstandings surrounding its operations and minimise the possibility of similar confrontations.
He said JED would provide necessary support to employees directly or indirectly affected by the incident.
The company also appealed to NUEE members to resume and continue their normal duties while maintaining cooperation with management on measures aimed at protecting workers.
The NAF residential facility has reportedly remained without electricity supplied by JED since the confrontation.
