President Bola Tinubu has congratulated candidates who emerged victorious in legislative by-elections conducted across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, urging them to provide effective representation to their constituents.
The All Progressives Congress secured four of the five seats contested, while the Allied Peoples Movement won the remaining constituency.
The elections covered one federal constituency and four State House of Assembly constituencies.
The successful APC candidates were Kallamu MaiJama’a for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, Husseini Datti for Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Okolosi Ator for Udu State Constituency in Delta and Yakubu Ali for Disina State Constituency in Bauchi.
Adamu Yakubu of the Allied Peoples Movement emerged winner of the Sakwa State Constituency election in Bauchi State.
Reacting to the outcome on Sunday, Tinubu described the APC’s performance as an indication of continued grassroots support for the party and his administration’s reform programme.
The President’s position represents the administration’s interpretation of the election results, which involved five individual constituencies across four states.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said he was encouraged by what he described as continued support for the APC and the reforms implemented by his administration over the past three years.
He maintained that the benefits of the government’s economic reforms would become increasingly evident as the administration proceeds with the next phase of its programme.
Tinubu also urged the newly elected lawmakers to justify the confidence placed in them by their constituents through diligent and effective representation.
He encouraged candidates who were unsuccessful in the elections to accept the results and continue participating in the democratic process.
The President commended voters and security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the exercise and praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting the polls.
He urged the electoral body to build on lessons from the by-elections and address identified shortcomings ahead of future elections, particularly the 2027 general elections.
The five by-elections were conducted on Saturday, September 19, to fill vacant legislative seats in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Dawakin Kudu, Udu, Disina and Sakwa state constituencies.
The electoral commission had described the exercises as opportunities to test its operational preparations and draw lessons ahead of subsequent elections.
