Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has spoken publicly about his daughter Adaeze’s engagement to her female partner, saying that as a father he can offer advice but cannot dictate how an adult chooses to live.
Charly Boy shared a video from the engagement ceremony on Instagram and asked members of the public to wish the couple well.
Addressing reactions to his daughter’s decision, the entertainer said Adaeze, whom he described as 50 years old, was old enough to make personal decisions about her life.
“As a father, I fit advise. I fit talk my mind. But I no get remote control for another adult’s life,” he said.
‘SHE WILL ALWAYS BE MY DAUGHTER’
Charly Boy said his relationship with his daughter remained unchanged by her decision, noting that she had given him five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
She was previously married to Metu Anu in a traditional wedding in Abuja in 2018, and that marriage subsequently ended in divorce.
He also referred to her previous marriage, saying she had experienced difficulties before leaving the relationship and later beginning her current one.
The entertainer said his own experience with his father influenced his position, recalling that his father could not prevent him from developing the unconventional public identity for which he eventually became known.
He said that experience made him question why he should attempt to control the choices of his adult daughter.
“I no fit choose her happiness for her,” he said.
Charly Boy maintained that adults should be allowed to make decisions about their personal lives and accept responsibility for those choices.
He concluded by wishing his daughter happiness and calling on others to respect individual decisions.
“At the end of the day, na love remain. Make everybody live their truth and find their own happiness,” he said.
