The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that it remains committed to electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance on Saturday while supervising operations at the commission’s National Situation Room in Abuja during the September 19 bye-elections.
The commission conducted legislative bye-elections in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and Udu State Constituency in Delta. INEC had scheduled the polls for September 19.
Amupitan said operational and administrative challenges identified before the elections were addressed through the commission’s Situation Room. He said the experience would help INEC refine its processes and improve efficiency and public confidence.
He described the four bye-elections as important operational tests ahead of 2027, saying each election allows the commission to assess its logistics, technology and administrative readiness.
INEC had also carried out preparations, including training electoral officers and distributing sensitive materials before the polls. In Gombe, for example, sensitive materials were distributed in the presence of political-party agents, security officials, CBN representatives and journalists.
The commission’s official results portal is currently showing uploaded results for the five constituencies, with completion varying by constituency as results continue to be uploaded.
Amupitan said the lessons from the exercises would feed into preparations for the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections and the February 6, 2027 governorship and State House of Assembly elections, which are listed on INEC’s official platform.
The chairman thanked officials working in the Situation Room and the technical team for monitoring the multi-state exercise and receiving field reports.
