United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to establish an “AI Force” and appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, or “AI czar”, as his administration pushes to accelerate the development of the technology in the United States.
Trump announced the initiative on Saturday, describing artificial intelligence as a major driver of future economic growth and comparing the proposed AI Force with the creation of the US Space Force during his first presidency.
However, the structure, powers, budget, membership and launch date of the proposed AI Force have not been announced, and Trump did not say when the new AI adviser would be appointed. It also remains unclear whether the body would operate as a civilian government initiative, an inter-agency structure or something broader.
TRUMP BACKS RAPID AI DEVELOPMENT
Trump said his administration would seek to protect and encourage the growth of the American AI industry rather than impose restrictions he believes could slow technological development.
The position is consistent with earlier measures by his administration aimed at accelerating AI adoption and strengthening US technological competitiveness. In June, Trump signed an executive order directing federal action on AI innovation, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection.
Trump has also rejected some warnings that increasingly advanced AI could eventually escape human control, while maintaining that existing criminal and civil laws can address unlawful uses of the technology.
ANNOUNCEMENT COMES AMID AI SAFETY DEBATE
The announcement comes amid renewed debate in the United States over how rapidly advanced AI systems should be developed and what safeguards should accompany them.
Some technology executives, researchers and lawmakers have called for stronger protections as AI capabilities advance, while others argue that excessive regulation could weaken American innovation and competitiveness.
Trump’s administration has largely emphasised faster innovation while also introducing measures addressing cybersecurity, national security and responsible government deployment of AI.
The proposed AI Force is therefore an announced initiative rather than a fully defined federal body at this stage. Further details will be required to establish its legal authority, responsibilities and relationship with existing US agencies involved in artificial intelligence policy.
