President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and admirers of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced by his family on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, described him as the “Lion of Lufodo” while appealing to the public and media to respect the family’s privacy during the mourning period.
Reacting to the death, President Tinubu described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished thespians, whose career made significant contributions to theatre, television and film both in Nigeria and internationally.
The President said Jacobs played an important role in the growth and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, adding that his performances and dedication to his craft influenced generations of actors and filmmakers.
Tinubu also acknowledged the late actor’s ability to portray characters with depth and authenticity, noting that his work earned him recognition among audiences in Nigeria and abroad.
According to the President, the death represents a loss not only to Nigeria but also to Africa’s film industry and the wider global community of performing arts enthusiasts.
He said Jacobs’ body of work would remain an enduring part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and contribute to the country’s identity on the global stage.
Jacobs, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, began his professional career in British television and later appeared in international productions before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the country’s most prominent actors.
His career spanned more than five decades across theatre, television and film, during which he received several industry honours and awards. He was also a recipient of the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues in the film industry and the wider Nigerian creative community.
He prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul and comfort for his family at this time of loss.
