Residents of Plateau State have called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to intensify efforts to address the wave of violence in the state, saying repeated condolence messages are not enough to stop attacks and killings.
The calls followed a bloody weekend between September 11 and 13, during which about 21 people were reportedly killed in separate attacks across Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South Local Government Areas.
Mutfwang, in a statement on Monday, condemned the killings and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
The governor said the state government was working with security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen the state’s security architecture through dialogue, intelligence sharing and community engagement.
He also assured residents that security agencies were pursuing those responsible for the attacks and would bring them to justice.
However, callers to a radio programme on Monday criticised the government’s response, with some accusing the administration of relying too heavily on statements of condemnation without doing enough to prevent further attacks.
Social activist Nanle Bamshak said he was disappointed with the governor’s handling of insecurity, alleging that Mutfwang had become more focused on his political future than on the safety of residents.
Another caller, Peter Alamba, said residents were tired of what he described as repeated press statements and condolence messages following attacks.
“We need proactive action to stop the cycle of violence and killings and not condolence messages and fake assurances of fighting insecurity in the state,” he said.
Polycarp Bitrus also criticised the administration, alleging that communities were being attacked while the government continued to issue similar statements after each incident.
John Fadung, who said he supported Mutfwang during the 2023 election, also expressed disappointment with the governor’s handling of the security situation.
The residents’ criticisms come as insecurity remains a major concern in several parts of Plateau State, with calls growing for stronger preventive measures and more effective protection of vulnerable communities.
