The United States and Iran have intensified military confrontations around the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides carrying out attacks on vessels in the strategic waterway amid a prolonged conflict that has affected global energy markets.
The latest escalation followed a series of exchanges in which the United States said it struck three Iranian oil tankers after Iranian forces launched ballistic missiles towards two US Navy vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command said no American personnel were injured during the missile attacks.
According to US officials, the targeted vessels included an oil tanker near Kharg Island, Iran’s major crude export hub, another near Jask, and a third vessel in the Gulf of Oman. Washington said the ships were linked to networks supporting Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran’s IRGC, however, said the US military actions were part of a broader pressure campaign against Tehran and claimed responsibility for targeting vessels it described as using unauthorised routes through the Strait of Hormuz. The group also warned ships operating in the region against movements it considered suspicious.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes, has become a major focus of the conflict. The waterway previously handled a significant share of global oil shipments, and continued insecurity has raised concerns over possible disruptions to international energy supplies.
The United States has maintained pressure on Iran through military operations and economic measures, while Tehran has continued to resist demands to open unrestricted access through the strategic waterway. Both countries have accused each other of escalating tensions and threatening regional stability.
The renewed hostilities have also affected global oil markets. Brent crude prices have climbed amid concerns over supply disruptions, with analysts warning that continued attacks around the Gulf region could increase pressure on energy prices worldwide.
Experts say the ongoing confrontation carries the risk of further escalation, particularly if either side miscalculates during military operations in the region. Diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have so far failed to prevent continued clashes between Washington and Tehran.
The conflict remains centred on control of the Strait of Hormuz, economic pressure, and competing security interests, with international observers monitoring developments for signs of further military escalation or renewed negotiations.
