Residents of Ogooluwa community in Akiode Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, have been thrown into mourning following a tragic murder-suicide involving Bidemi Odukoya, the Shepherd of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) Iri Orun Parish, and his wife.
Police reports indicate that Odukoya allegedly attacked and killed his wife with a machete and a heavy wooden stool during a midnight dispute at their residence on Monday, August 31. Following the assault, the clergyman fled the scene and subsequently died after stepping in front of a heavy-duty truck along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to community sources, the altercation occurred around 2:00 a.m. inside the couple’s three-bedroom bungalow, located adjacent to their church parish.
Neighbours alerted by the couple’s 14-year-old son arrived at the scene to find the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. Witnesses reported seeing Odukoya holding a cutlass before he retreated inside the residence and escaped into the night.
Shortly after 7:00 a.m., eyewitnesses at Coker Junction along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway reported seeing a man repeatedly crossing the highway before jumping in front of an oncoming commercial vehicle. He died instantly from the impact.
While local community leaders initially characterised the couple as peaceful, subsequent accounts from neighbours and community representatives revealed a history of unresolved domestic disputes:
Youth leaders within the community noted that persistent mutual allegations of infidelity had strained the marriage.
Some neighbours also confirmed that the couple had been engaged in ongoing friction and had not been on speaking terms since June. Community elders disclosed that the couple had an active court matter regarding their marital disputes and were scheduled for a court appearance just days after the incident occurred.
Both the husband and wife were buried on the grounds behind their residence on Monday evening.
The Ogun State Police Command, speaking through Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed that the command is investigating the tragedy, stressing that the case file has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
