Security operatives in Kebbi State have foiled separate kidnapping attempts in Maiyama and Shanga Local Government Areas, killing one bandit, rescuing abducted victims, and arresting a suspected accomplice.
A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, revealed that the operations were launched following coordinated distress calls from affected communities.
According to the statement, a gang of eight armed men invaded the residence of Alhaji Sani in the Botoro Gadi community of Maiyama LGA, abducting two residents; Muhafi Sani and Shamsiya Aliyu.
The Divisional Police Officer in Maiyama reportedly led a joint team of police officers and local vigilantes in a hot pursuit of the suspects, engaging them in a fierce gun duel.
“During the exchange of fire, one of the bandits was neutralised, while a dane gun and one empty cartridge shell were recovered from the scene,” Abubakar confirmed.
In a similar incident, another group of bandits launched an attack on Kwari community in Giron Masa, Shanga LGA, kidnapping Suleiman and Yunwa Suleiman. The DPO of Shanga quickly mobilised a combined force of Police, Army, and vigilantes, resulting in a gun battle that forced the bandits to flee into the forest, abandoning their captives.
“The victims were safely rescued, while the bandits escaped with gunshot wounds,” the statement added.
In a related development, police operatives arrested Musa Muhammad in Takware village, Shanga, for unlawful possession of ammunition. He was found with three live rounds and 20 empty shells of 7.62×39mm calibre.
The Kebbi State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the onslaught against banditry and other criminal activities in the state, urging residents to provide timely information to aid security operations.
